CITATION:
Mention in Despatches : Shortly after 0145 hours on Monday 14 June 1982, A and B Companies commenced their attack on Wireless Ridge in the final stages of the advance on Port Stanley. On approaching the objective enemy guns began accurate shelling which was to continue well after dawn. By about 0230 hours, the first casualties were reported and Private O'Rourke, the junior member of the Company Aid Post, ran to assist a wounded soldier. On the way fierce shelling recommenced fatally wounding the Company Quartermaster Sergeant and injuring the other two members of the Company Aid Post. Undaunted by the darkness, the shelling and his very limited experience as a company medical orderly, Private O'Rourke began to deal with the Company Quartermaster Sergeant's severed leg and the wounds of the other two company medical orderlies until the arrival of the Company Sergeant Major. His prompt and efficient action may well have saved the lives of the two wounded medical orderlies though unfortunately, the Company Quartermaster Sergeant was beyond help. His courage and initiative far outweighed the requirements of his rank and experience.
