CITATION:

Navy and Marine Corps Medal : Boatswain's Mate Second Class Walter H. Otte, United States Navy, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy. During the summer of 1949, the U.S.S. BURTON ISLAND (AG-88), prepared to assist in establishing a beachhead against ice as part of the Navy's Point Barrow Re-supply Expedition, when a wire towing cable caught in her starboard propeller. With the ship lying to in the tumbling sea and rolling, Boatswain's Mate Second Class Otte, a member of Underwater Demolition Team ONE, donned his frog suit and went overboard. On his fifth attempt, he freed the propeller and the convoy proceeded with its ice breaker.
