I am looking for pictures or other info of sergeant Robert (Bob) Francis of 1st SAS. He is mentioned a couple of times in Stirling's men of Gavin Mortimer. In 1944 he was a 21 year old Devonian and he has seen action in France.

Thanks

Hi
I have just discovered this site and have some info on Bob, who was a neighbour of mine in Waldron, East Sussex.

Owen (Bob) has now sadly passed away - 2002? , but I knew him for about ten years up until 1999. He was a charming man, and was well known in the village - indeed a recipient of the MC was heard to say there was only one WW2 killer in the village and that was Bob Francis. He attended the annual reunions of the SAS up until the end and I had the privilege of being invited to his den in the old workhouse in Waldron where he showed me his memorabilia and trophies!.

He often spoke of Paddy Mayne who was a personal friend and Bob told me that Paddy was the inspiration in his army career.

Anything else you need to know just ask

Bob suffered from emphesemia which plagued him in his final years. In the church at his funeral I am told that one half was his colleagues from Shell and the other half was SAS!!!

Regards

Robin
