CITATION:

Silver Star : For gallantry in action against the enemy on 8 January 1945. The platoon of which Private First Class Schallert was a part, was pinned down by heavy enemy machine gun fire and was suffering heavy casualties. Private First Class Schallert, with complete disregard for his own safety, charged the enemy position firing his own machine gun from the hip. His gallant action silenced the enemy position and permitted the platoon to continue its mission. His action was om accordance with the highest standards of military service.
