Robert Schamberger was born on February 25, 1946, in Kearny, New Jersey. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on January 17, 1966, and went on active duty to begin basic training on May 3, 1966. Schamberger completed basic training at NTC Great Lakes, Illinois, in July 1966, and then attended Engineman A School. Petty Officer Schamberger attended Basic Airborne training at Fort Benning, Georgia, in July and August 1967, and then attended Underwater Demolition Team Replacement Training at Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, Virginia, from August to November 1967 without completing the course. He again attended Underwater Demolition Team Basic training, this time with Class 042 (East Coast) from January to May 1968, and completed the course. He first served with Underwater Demolition Team TWENTY-TWO at NAB Little Creek, followed by service with SEAL Team TWO at Little Creek. Senior Chief Schamberger's final assignment was with SEAL Team SIX at Dam Neck, Virginia, from November 1980 until he was killed in action during Operation Urgent Fury, the invasion of Grenada, on October 23, 1983. His remains were never recovered from the Caribbean Sea near Grenada. There is a cenotaph for him at Coral Ridge Cemetery in Cape Coral, Florida.
