CITATION:
Mention in Despatches : On the 19th July, 1972 during the battle of Mirbat SHEPHERD commanded a small group of men involved in the fighting to the south of the town. His group together with other similar-groups, was responsible for clearing the enemy from the positions they had taken up in order to cover their comrades carrying out the frontal assault on the town itself.
During this operation three groups of enemy were encountered. The first enemy group consisting of 4 determined men armed with AK. 47s was destroyed in an assault led by SHEPHERD and his group. With great determination, elan and leadership SHEPHERD overran this group, killing all 4 men. He then moved forward towards a further group of 5 men armed with AK. 47s.
The ground was difficult and rocky the enemy's fire accurate and intense. Once again showing great leadership and determination SHEPHERD moved his group forward to within 50 yards of the enemy's position where he was able to cover in an assault by one of the other groups involved in the operation. Moving from this point of success he again took part in a final assault on a larger group of enemy near the town perimeter. This assault was also successful and SHEPHERD's section played a vital part in this action.
Throughout these operations SHEPHERD was to be seen leading his men forward with great dash and elan and without regard for his own safety. His leadership and professional ability were an inspiration to all and contributed in great measure to the overall success of the operations on the 19th July.
