CITATION:

British Empire Medal : Whilst engaged on rendering safe the latest type of enemy anti-tank mines at an Ordnance Depot at OLNEY, Bucks, on 20th December, 1944, an explosion occurred killing three N.C.Os and five Sappers, and injuring several other military personnel. Lance-Corporal Violet was blown over by blast and surrounded by dead bodies and injured men. On recovery from shock he realised the situation and took complete charge. He sent for doctors and ambulances which were soon on the spot, attended to the injured meanwhile and prepared a nominal roll. On arrival of an officer he reported his action and gave every assistance in identifying the dead. He then cleared the area of the remaining unexploded mines to enable the police to search the site. Two of the mines were later discovered to be in a dangerous condition, owing to the explosion and had to be destroyed.
