He resigned his commission upon graduation from Colorado State University in 1936 for appointment as a Marine Corps second lieutenant. From January 1, 1968 to January 29, 1971 he served as the 12th Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps and, upon achieving four-star rank, became the first Assistant Commandant to receive four stars. He retired in 1971 as a United States Marine Corps General.</span></em></p></blockquote><p></p>
