CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Private First Class Audrey Galen Winn, Jr. (MCSN: 304011), United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, First Marine Raider Battalion, at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 20 July 1943. Acting as an ammunition carrier Private Winn constantly exposed himself to heavy enemy fire in order to carry ammunition to a machine gun in a forward position. When the gun crew was pinned down by accurate, hostile fire he aggressively returned to the rear and brought back badly needed ammunition. In the successful accomplishment of this courageous task Private First Class Winn sacrificed his life.
