Citation
Silver Star : The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Clyde R. Anthony (MCSN: 334059), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Leader of an Assault Group of Company H, Third Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 6 and 7 March 1945. When his platoon was held up on flat ground by rifle and automatic weapons fire from strongly defended positions to the front, Corporal Anthony constantly exposed himself to the hostile fire to locate many Japanese positions and, moving forward of his lines under the fierce barrage, directed the fire of tanks on the enemy targets. With some of the enemy positions still in action after the day's fighting, Corporal Anthony conferred that night with the Tank Commander and, returning with the tanks on the next day, again proceeded to expose himself to hostile fire to point out targets until the area was sufficiently cleared of the Japanese to allow his platoon to advance. His resolute courage and unselfish devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
