CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Boatswain's Mate Second Class Alvin Kenneth Anderson, United States Coast Guard, for conspicuous gallantry as coxswain of a scout boat wile attached to the U.S.S. CHARLES CARROLL (APA-28) during the amphibious assault to Salerno, Italy, on 9 September 1943. Boatswain's Mate Second Class Anderson, with an expert display of seamanship and complete disregard for his own safety, proceeded in the scout boat through mined waters to an assigned position close offshore and in the center of a landing beach from which the assault waves were guided to the heavily defended beach. For more than three hours he maintained this position under heavy enemy gunfire while an accurate range was marked, thereby materially contributing to the success of the assault. The exceptional courage under enemy fire and determined display by Boatswain's Mate Second Class Anderson were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
