CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to First Lieutenant Frank R. Anderwald (MCSN: 0-12897), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with the Fourth Marine Raider Battalion at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 20 July 1943. During the entire course of an attack covering a period in excess of five hours he constantly remained in the front lines, directed the fire of his platoon, reorganized its lines, and was personally responsible for the location and destruction of two enemy machine gun positions.
