CITATION:

George Cross : Lieutenant Armitage, who had recently been commended by the Captain of H.M.S. VERNON for good work in disabling mines, has since dealt with nine. The risks he accepted were of the same order as those encountered by Lt.Cdr. Ryan. One of the mines hung from a tree at Orpington, and could only be reached from a ladder, which offered on chance of escape if the fuze had been started. Another time he heard the clock ticking and was only 30 yards away when the bomb exploded. In spite of this he returned with undaunted bravery to carry on with the same work next day.
