John Bryson MM was my father, he passed away in Erskine Hospital on the 6th November 2009 age 96, The Glasgow branch of the Paras carried my father into the Crematorium. He had worked in the MOD until retirement at 65 years old. My mother always replied to the question of what John worked at, that he was in the CIA ! which was true but not what most folk thought it actually meant. He was Chief Inspector of Armaments. (CIA) in Bishopton ROF.

Hi Bob

Do you happen to know how your father got his MM in Greece?

As his medal recommendation is one of those 'missing' from Kew from that time.

My Father was in Athens at same time with 23rd Armoured Brigade.

Hi Gus,

I have no idea how my father got his MM in Greece, My dad "John" did not talk about his days in the Paras. (Army Air Corps) So can't help there, sorry. There however must be a record somewhere ? I don't understand your question regarding "recommendation is one missing from Kew" who or what is "Kew" I do have a copy of a page for the "Supplement to the London Gazette dated 16 August 1945 which I will try and load on here. This shows the list of men who received "The Military Medal"

I have tried the link and this opens up ok.

Best regards

Bob

Hi Bob

All of the recommendations (Citations) for gallantry medals awarded during WW2 should be searchable online via The National Archives (TNA) at Kew Gardens.

Unfortunately over 100 awarded to those brave men like your father who were in Greece during the civil war in late 1944 and early 45 are unaccounted for. And TNA have no idea what happened to them either.

One of my projects is to try and establish their actions through alternative sources.

If I do get any information on what John did, I will pass it on accordingly.

Regards

Gus

Hi Gus,

Thanks for the prompt response and info, It would be great to find more info about my Dad and would be greatly appreciated. Your project to establish their actions is this your job or a hobby?

regards

Bob
