My Grandfather was a Chindit, and served in Burma. He is currently not on the site. Who should I contact to post such details? Thanks :)

Hi Simon,

You need to contact John Robertson on this site. If you go to the very foot of any of the sites pages you will see his email link. You will have to be logged on to see it.

Its good to see a new member with Chindit connections, do you have much information on your Grandfather? As you can see I too am a Grandson of a Chindit, my Grandfather died a POW in 1943. His name was Arthur Leslie Howney and you can view his details from the 1943 Chindits index.

Welcome aboard and I hope you get something from the forum.

Steve (Bamboo).

Dear Steve

It is very kind of you to reply, and I'm sorry for my late reply.

My Grandma and father passed me quite a lot of background, a letter from Burma and the odd Christmas card. I also have my grandfathers medals and Chindit badge which went on the shoulder and his papers.

Many thanks again, and I will look at the Chindits intex for your grandfather.

I know its hard to believe, but my Grandma is 97 this year, so I can still ask the odd question about the Chindits!

Kind regards

Simon

Hi Simon,

Good to hear from you. You are very fortunate to have as much first hand information and paperwork as you do. I had almost nothing to go on, except that Grandad was a POW in Burma.

What regiment was your Grandfather in?

Best wishes.

Steve.

My great grandfather was a Chindit in the 2nd Leicesters, I too have been researching him after recently finding out that he was awarded a DCM for his actions in March/April 1944. I have, after a bit of effort managed to find out quite a bit about his time out there and even managed to trace relatives of the soldiers who were with him at the time. (Search for Thomas Chandler on this website and you can read a bit of the story with regards to his award). If your grandfather was involved in Operation Longcloth you will find that Steve who has replied to your query previously should be able to help you out if you have any questions. (I hope you dont mind me saying that Steve). :)). Please add any information that you have I would like to know more about your grandfather.

Is your grandfather still alive? I wonder if he knew my relative Lieutenant Colonel leigh Alexander. He was killed in action in the first Chindit expedition, Op Longcloth, 28 April 1943.

hi there simon my dad was with the 2 Bn Leicestershire Regiment (17 and 71 columns)
1944 in burama wat regiment was he in . thanks

My father was in 142 commando in 7 column on the 1st chindits. As an aside he could pick his units as he landed on D day with 4 commando!!!
Just entered to say that he did write a good account of the columns doings , albeit at a wee distance in time, that i would be happy to pass on to other members with reletives who were in the column
Andy

Hi Andy,

Wonderful to have another Longcloth family aboard here. I have sent you a message. I would be more than interested with the information about your father.

Best wishes.

Steve.

Hi Guys

There have been several postings with information on this unit and British Military Mission 204 on the Commando Veterans Association website. We also have a member whose father was OC of 142 for a short period and has a copy of the war diary. Another member was collating a list of those who served. You may wish to have a look at some of the postings that have been made. If you enter the site and go to the forum click on search and enter 142 and then send it will bring up the postings. A lot of information is on the one created by Kevin regarding his father with details of his father's own diary as well as the war diary, but it is worth reading them all.

Hope this is of some use

Pete

Hi Pete,

That is good advice for Andy. I am one of the chaps collating the members of 142 Coy and have been in contact with Kevin and a few others with a common interest.

These things do tend to become somewhat circular in the end!! :D

Steve.
