Mike was also a nationally ranked swimmer while at the Naval Academy. The records he set while swimming for the USNA stood for about 20 years. He was a dear, loyal friend. We met at the Academy where I was assigned to coach the Plebe team and instruct future officers in how to survive if they ever bailed out of their ship and intto the water. Mike and I roomed together while he was waiting for his SEAL team to begin training. We were in contact during his entire career and was aware that he had to extend his commitment in order to lead Seal Team 1
on its deployment. I am thankful that I do not know the name of the pickle brained Lt. J. G that posted the daily op orders on a public bulletin board for God and the north VN spies to read. It is a good possibility that I would have been sent to jail for actions resulting from a confrontation with him. Mike was one of the finest gentlemen I have ever met. It was an honor to be considered his friend. By Dick Beaver, D.C. Reno, NV
