CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Terry Edward Cothran (MCSN: 2010356), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company D, Third Reconnaissance Battalion, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 14 May 1965, the reconnaissance patrol of which Corporal Cothran was a member was ambushed by numerically superior enemy forces located on high ground and adjacent to the patrol route. The point Marine of the patrol was seriously wounded by the initial burst of enemy fire and was unable to move. With total disregard for his own safety, Corporal Cothran unhesitatingly left his covered position and traversed approximately twenty meters of exposed ground through enemy fire in an effort to reach the wounded Marine. During the course of his heroic effort, he was wounded. Disregarding his painful wound, Corporal Cothran once again entered the fire-swept area and reached his wounded comrade. With the aid of the patrol’s Corpsman, he succeeded in moving the wounded Marine to relative safety. By his courageous actions in risking his life and enduring a painful wound to save a fellow Marine, Corporal Cothran upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
