CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joseph Dye (ASN: 6663075), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 1st Ranger Battalion, on the early morning of 12 February 1943, in the vicinity 5 miles west of Sened Station, Tunisia. Private First Class Dye, acting as a scout for his squad, with fixed bayonet charged a machine gun nest in the face of intense fire, destroying and capturing enemy personnel and occupying the machine gun nest. It was due directly to the efforts of Private First Class Dye that the remainder of his squad was allowed to continue the assault without loss. The courage and devotion to duty displayed by Private First Class Dye was an inspiration to the other members of his unit and is deserving of the highest praise.
