CITATION:

Mention in Despatches : Between July and November 1967 RM 21776 Marine Neil Gibson, whilst serving as a sniper in Z Company, 45 Commando RM, showed courage under fire and a singleness of purpose beyond the normal call of duty. He frequently volunteered for additional long spells in observation posts which, in the nature of things were always exposed to enemy action.

On 3rd November 1967 he was a member of a three man observation post in MA' ALLA BANDAR which came under fire from terrorists in a nearby building. Marine Gibson immediately took command and controlled the fire from the observation post, whilst at the same time he opened fire himself killing at least one terrorist. His coolness under fire, his prompt and accurate shooting, and his firm assumption of control in a difficult situation not only dealt with the terrorists leading to the capture of a weapon, but was also directly instrumental in ending further terrorist attacks in the MA' ALLA BANDAR area, which remained quiet until the withdrawal.

Place : South Arabia
Date of Action : July - November 1967
How Employed : Sniper
