CITATION:
Military Medal : This young Marine aged 20 years, serving in the acting rank, of Sergeant, has commanded a sub-section for over a year with conspicuous success. By his drive, initiative and example of personal bravery he has achieved results far above these to be expected of one of his seniority.
In adversity he has showed himself to be quick thinking and resourceful. On the 2nd of May 1951 in the BUKIT TINNGI area near BATU GAJAH a patrol led by Lieutenant F.E. JOHNSON, MC, RM was ambushed by a superior force of enemy from entrenched positions. Lieutenant JOHNSON was seriously wounded in the first burst of fire, Sergeant GOUGE took command, and drove off the enemy. He then extricated the patrol and wounded Officer over extremely difficult country with great skill and devotion to duty.
During a three week operation in December 1951 he commended his sub section while the three remaining sub-sections of his Troop were commanded by Officers.
At all times this NCOs conduct has been exemplary. He has never spared himself either in the field, or in his routine duties. His conduct has always been an inspiration to men that he led so well.
Place : Malaya
Date of Action : March 1951 to March 1952
How Employed : Sub-Section Sgt
