ROLL OF HONOUR:

Silver Star : For gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: Sergeant Greene distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 23 March 1969 as platoon leader advisor to a mobile strike force company on a search and destroy operation against the enemy strongholds of Tuk Chup Knoll, Nui Coto. Contact was made with the communists and Sergeant Greene began leading his men toward the hostile positions through a hail of bullets. Suddenly three of his soldiers were seriously wounded by an enemy rocket. Realizing that the men would die if they did not receive immediate medical care, Sergeant Greene called for a smoke screen to provide him with partial cover and maneuvered to his fallen comrades through the deadly enemy fire. Despite the intense enemy barrage, he pulled two of them to safety and returned for the third, who required first aid before he could be moved. As he began to administer emergency treatment, Sergeant Greene was mortally wounded by an enemy sniper. Sergeant Greene's gallantry in action, at the cost of his life, was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
