Distinguished Service Cross : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Larry L. Hawks, United States Army, for exceptionally valorous conduct in the face of the enemy of the United States while serving with, Operational Detachment Alpha 323 (ODA-323), 1st Battalion, 3d Special Forces Group (Airborne), attached to a Joint Task Force in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM on 25 July 2005. On that date, Sergeant First Class Hawks demonstrated valor, dedication to duty, and disregard for his own personal safety, which directly contributed to mission accomplishment. His gallantry under extreme enemy fire led to the destruction of a determined enemy and helped to save the lives of his fellow Detachment Members and Coalition Soldiers. Sergeant First Class Hawks' distinctive bravery and valor contributed to fifteen confirmed enemy killed in action, the capture of fourteen insurgents, and the recovery of over thirty light and heavy weapons. His performance reflects great credit upon himself, the Combined Joint Task Force-Afghanistan, and the United States Army.
