CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Platoon Sergeant Isaac N. Hutchin (MCSN: 269766), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Sergeant serving with Company A, First Battalion, Twenty-sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 19 March 1945. Undeterred by the deadly barrages of hostile gun fire as his unit came into close contact with fanatically resisting Japanese infantry, Platoon Sergeant Hutchin boldly stood upright in full view of the enemy and skillfully guided a half track into position. Then, fearlessly disregarding the increasing volume of hostile fire, he took station in strategic position ahead of the half-track and directed the blasting fire of his heavy weapon against the Japanese positions until he had effected their total destruction. Determined to maintain his advantage, he immediately initiated a smashing assault, advancing with indomitable courage against the hopelessly confused enemy. Instantly killed while leading the attack at a dead run, Platoon Sergeant Hutchin had rendered valiant service in the face of great odds, thereby contributing to the effectiveness of his company's operations again this vital outpost of the Japanese Empire and his dauntless initiative, aggressive tactics and inspiring leadership throughout upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
