CITATION:

Silver Star : For gallantry in action while engaged in military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Four Kinton distinguished himself while serving as a Radio Operator with Company E [Long Range Patrol], 20th. Infantry [Airborne], 4th Infantry Division. On 25 March 1968, Specialist four Kinton was part of a six-man patrol on a reconnaissance mission. The patrol made contact with a larger enemy force and immediately radioed for an extraction helicopter. As the patrol commenced to withdraw to a landing zone, the enemy force attempted to assault and overrun the small force. Specialist Four Kinton promptly selected to remain behind as the patrol moved to the landing zone to set up a defensive position. Engaging the enemy with his M16, Specialist Four Kinton successfully held off the much larger force long enough for the patrol to be safely extracted. He was mortally wounded by small arms fire at this time. Through his courage and initiative, Specialist Four Kinton prevented the entire patrol from being overrun.
