CITATION:

Officer of the Order of the British Empire : Lt Col MADOC has commanded 42 Commando with conspicuous success whilst the unit has been in MALAYA. During the past year they have killed 34 bandits and captured a further 16. For this a this large measure of the credit must go to the Commanding Officer.

42 Commando have an excellent spirit; they are always keen to go, they seek opportunities to add to their score and always aim to exploit, the most fleeting contact.

Leadership of a very high order is required to maintain a high level effort over an extended period. It can be achieved in no other way. 42 Commando have not lacked that leadership. Indeed they have been fortunate in having an officer of Lt Col MADOC's calibre to lead and encourage them. Under him they go from Strength to strength.

It is noticeable that when good co-operation exists between the military and the police the results are good. Lt Col MADOC's relations with his police opposite number are particularly happy, there is good exchange of information and good joint planning. This state of affairs is reflected on lower levels in his unit.

I strongly recommend that the outstanding results achieved by 42 Commando during the past year be suitably recognised and rewarded by the award to its Commanding Officer of the DSO.

Place : Perak, Malaya
Date of Action : June 1950 to June 1951
How Employed : Commanding 42 Commando RM
