CITATION:

Distinguished Service Cross : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Herman Manuel (ASN: 20845086), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 1st Battalion (White Combat Team), Task Force Galahad, 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional), in action against enemy forces on 28 July 1944, near Myitkyina, North Burma. Corporal Manuel with the aid of a fellow soldier, voluntarily risked his life to rescue a wounded soldier under intense machine-gun fire.
