CITATION:
George Medal : On 8th June, 1944, In Normandy, this non-commissioned officer showed outstanding initiative, courage and devotion to duty in organizing a fire fighting party to deal with an outbreak of fire in an ammunition dump caused by an enemy air attack.
On several occasions Sergeant McGowan was blown over by blast from exploding ammunition and mines, but he persevered in his efforts to prevent the flames from spreading and a large quantity of vitally needed ammunition was saved.
