Afghanistan 2008

Bronze Star (with V-device) : The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V" to Captain Christian Pfeffer, United States Marine Corps, for heroic achievement in connection with combat operations against the enemy serving as Assistant Team Leader, Marine Special Operations Team 5, Marine Special Operations Advisor Group, U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Special Operations Command in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM on 28 October 2008. Captain Pfeffer's patrol came under attack on a canalized road in a village. He immediately evaluated the situation and led his section forward to seize an insurgent held compound. Shortly after securing the compound, his section was counterattacked by a numerically superior insurgent force. While leading the defense of the compound Captain Pfeffer received two separate gunshot wounds to his right arm. He remained in command of his section throughout the fight, continuing to aid his fellow Marines by utilizing his uninjured arm to prepare hand grenades for them. Although injured and suffering from heavy blood loss, Captain Pfeffer moved without assistance as his section fought their way out of the surrounded compound and covered over a kilometer of ground under fire to link-up with the remainder of his patrol. Instead of providing care for his injuries he ensured that the other members of his section were able to maximize their firepower and engage the insurgent forces attempting to prevent them from withdrawing. By his extraordinary leadership, initiative, and total dedication to duty, Captain Pfeffer reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. (The Combat Distinguishing Device is authorized.)
