CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Guadalupe Prado, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action in the Republic of Vietnam on 9 June 1969. Specialist Prado distinguished himself while serving as a rifleman in Company D, 2d Battalion (Airborne), 506th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile), during combat operations in the A Shau Valley, Republic of Vietnam. At approximately 1700 hours on the cited date, Company D, while moving in a reconnaissance in force operation, was engaged by an unknown size enemy force. During the initial contact Specialist Prado was situated on a rock shelf above the rest of his element. Disregarding his unprotected position, he leveled intense M-16 rifle fire against the enemy ranks, thus allowing the remainder of his platoon to take cover. His courageous act allowed the element to organize an effective volume of fire against the insurgent force and hold casualties to a minimum. Continuing to place effective fire upon the enemy from his open position, Specialist Prado was struck by small arms fire and fatally wounded. Specialist Prado's personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
