Bronze Star : The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V" to Chief Special Warfare Operator (SEAL) Thomas M. Shea, United States Navy, for heroic achievement in connection with combat operations against the enemy as SEAL Team **** *** Platoon Leading Chief Petty Officer, in direct support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, from May to October 2009. On 19 July 2009, Chief Petty Officer Shea led his platoon during an in-extremis Quick Reaction Force mission to rescue a Special Forces Operational Detachment Alfa team that had been ambushed and was surrounded. As insurgents attempted to overrun the Operational Detachment Alfa, he led his platoon in an air assault onto a knife edge mountain ridgeline overlooking the Operational Detachment Alfa. During a day-long combined arms battle, he personally executed an airstrike that killed two fighters and achieved a high-angle sniper kill at 1,100 yards. His decisive combat leadership resulted in 22 Enemy Killed in Action and the safe extraction of the Operational Detachment Alfa. Throughout five months of combat, Chief Petty Officer Shea fearlessly led his platoon during 22 firefights and 340 hours of troops in contact, personally accounting for seven Enemy Killed in Action. These operations resulted in 174 Enemy Killed in Action, six High Value Individuals captured, and $1.3 billion in enemy narcotics and explosives destroyed. Chief Petty Officer Shea's extraordinary guidance, zealous initiative, and total dedication to duty reflected great credit upon him and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (The Combat Distinguishing Device is authorized.)
