CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Justin T. Viene, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with as a Rifle Squad Leader with the 2d Battalion, 75th Infantry Regiment (Ranger), during combat operations on 29 July 2004, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM in Afghanistan. While conducting a combat patrol, Staff Sergeant Viene's squad came under direct enemy mortar and rocket propelled grenade fires from an ambush. Without regard for his own safety, Staff Sergeant Viene moved out of cover and concealment to retrieve rounds for his Gustaf Gunner from his vehicle, and then again moved out into enemy fire and directed fire for his gunner. He continued to subject himself to enemy fire while firing his weapon to direct his squad's fire and the support positions fire. Retrieving the squad's assault weapon from one of his wounded men, he led his remaining two squad members in an assault directly into the enemy positions. Through his distinctive accomplishments, Staff Sergeant Viene's actions reflected great credit upon himself, 2d Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, and the United States Army.
