CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Dwight Montgomery Durham (ASN: 15929000), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Durham distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 10 April 1969, while serving as a patrol leader with Company H (Ranger), 75th Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 1st Cavalry Division, during a reconnaissance patrol in Tay Ninh Province, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit became heavily engaged with a large enemy force, Sergeant Durham, although wounded, exposed himself to the intense hostile fire as he directed the base of fire of his men. Seeing that the radio operator was seriously wounded, Sergeant Durham moved forward and secured the radio. Although heavy enemy fire was then directed at his position, Sergeant Durham directed aerial rocket artillery upon the enemy emplacements, greatly relieving the pressure on his small patrol. He continued to direct supporting fire on the enemy until he was mortally wounded. Sergeant Durham's gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
