CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to First Lieutenant Malcolm N. McCarthy (MCSN: 0-13124), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for gallantry in action at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, in skillfully and aggressively leading his men forward under heavy enemy machine-gun, rifle and mortar fire, personally locating and effecting the destruction of two hostile machine-gun positions and in refusing to be evacuated when wounded on 20 July 1943.
